Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2 - Zero Hunger

SDG 2, "Zero Hunger," is a crucial and fundamental goal within the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the heart of our global challenge lies hunger, the primary cause of death worldwide. Despite our planet's abundant resources, millions suffer from malnutrition due to unequal access and inefficient distribution. Through the promotion of sustainable agriculture, coupled with modern technologies to improve nutrition and promote equitable distribution systems, we envision a world where every individual is nourished. Together, we can ensure that no one will ever endure the pain of hunger again.

Here's why SDG 2 is so critical:

  1. Basic Human Right: Access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food is a fundamental human right. SDG 2 acknowledges this and strives to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry, promoting the dignity and well-being of all individuals.
  2. Health and Nutrition: Hunger and malnutrition have severe health consequences, particularly for children. Achieving SDG 2 means addressing issues like stunted growth, micronutrient deficiencies, and related health problems, leading to better overall health outcomes.
  3. Eradicating Poverty: Hunger and poverty are closely interlinked. Addressing hunger is a key step toward poverty eradication (SDG 1) as it empowers individuals and communities to break free from cycles of poverty and dependency.
  4. Economic growth: Food security and improved nutrition is essential for economic development. When people have access to enough food, they are better able to engage in productive activities, contributing to economic growth and stability.
  5. Agricultural Sustainability: SDG 2 emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices. By promoting sustainable farming methods and ensuring that food production meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, we can promote sustainable agriculture that can protect the environment and natural resources (SDGs 12 and 15).
  6. Resilience to Shocks: Achieving zero hunger means building resilient food systems that can withstand shocks and crises, such as natural disasters, economic downturns, or pandemics. This resilience benefits communities and entire nations.
  7. Gender Equality: Women play a vital role in the agriculture sector and food production. SDG 2 recognizes the importance of gender equality (SDG 5) in achieving zero hunger by ensuring women's access to resources and decision-making power in food production and distribution.
  8. Child Development: Adequate nutrition in the early years is crucial for a child's physical and cognitive development. SDG 2 contributes to ensuring that children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
  9. Global Food System: Hunger is a global challenge that requires international cooperation. SDG 2 calls for partnerships and collaboration among countries, organizations, and stakeholders to address food security and malnutrition on a global scale.
  10. Conflict Prevention: Food insecurity can be a driver of conflicts. Achieving zero hunger contributes to peace and stability (SDG 16) by addressing one of the root causes of social unrest and violence.
  11. Environmental Sustainability: Sustainable agriculture and food production practices are essential for preserving biodiversity (SDG 15) and mitigating climate change (SDG 13). SDG 2 aligns with these broader environmental goals.

In summary, SDG 2, "Zero Hunger," is critical because it addresses the foundational need for food security, nutrition, and sustainable agricultural practices. Achieving this goal has far-reaching implications for human well-being, poverty reduction, economic development, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and peace and stability. It represents a significant step toward a more equitable and sustainable world where everyone has access to the nutritious and sufficient food that they need to thrive.

Your contributions in achieving SDG 2

Everyone possesses the ability to contribute to the achievement of the Global Goals. Let's leverage these eight targets to eliminate world hunger.

Target 2.1

You can actively participate in supporting the Global Goals of universal access to safe and nutritious food by 2030. Join initiatives working towards ending hunger and ensuring that all individuals, especially the poor and vulnerable, have consistent access to safe and nutritious food throughout the year.

Target 2.2

By 2030, you can play a role in eliminating all forms of malnutrition, particularly in children under 5 years of age, by supporting internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting. Contribute to addressing the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and older persons to ensure a healthy and well-nourished global community.

Target 2.3

Support initiatives that empower small-scale food producers, including women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists, and fishers. Take action to see small scale food producers double their agricultural productivity and incomes by 2030, providing secure and equal access to land, resources, knowledge, financial services, markets, and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

Target 2.4

Get involved in sustainable agriculture initiatives to contribute to the commitment of achieving sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices by 2030. Participate in efforts to increase productivity, maintain ecosystems, strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, and improve land and soil quality.

Target 2.5

Act in alignment with the shared goal of maintaining the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants, and farmed animals by 2020. Promote access to and fair the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge for a more diverse and sustainable food production.

Target 2.6

Support initiatives developing countries that enhance agricultural productive capacity, especially in developing countries and least developed countries. Contribute to increased investment in rural infrastructure, agricultural research, extension services, technology development, and gene banks to strengthen the foundation of global agriculture.

Target 2.7

Advocate for fair and transparent global agricultural trade practices by correcting and preventing trade restrictions and distortions in world agricultural markets. Join efforts to eliminate all forms of all agricultural trade restrictions, export subsidies and export measures with equivalent effect, aligning with the mandate of the Doha Development Round.

Target 2.8

Stay informed and actively participate in efforts to ensure the proper functioning of food commodity markets and their derivatives. Support measures that facilitate timely access to market information, including on food reserves, to help limit extreme food price volatility and maintain stable food commodity markets for the benefit of all.

Things to Do to Get Started

  • Find a Goal 2 charity you want to support. Any donation, big or small, can make a difference!
  • Buy local and in-season food. Try to grow some of your own food.
  • Don’t waste food. Freeze fresh produce and leftovers if you don’t have the chance to eat them before they go bad.
  • Buy Funny Fruit—many fruits and vegetables are thrown out because their size, shape, or color are not “right”. Buying these perfectly good funny fruit, utilizes food that might otherwise go to waste.
  • Consume less meat and become vegetarian for one day a week. The meat production industry has a huge impact on the environment.
